Olafur Eliasson
Composition with window, Iceland
In 1990, while still a student at the Royal Academy of Fine arts in Copenhagen, Olafur Eliasson worked on an art project focused on windows. This project uses the silhouette of a window frame produced by partially masking a spotlight with a gobo, a special stencil for creating lighting effects in theater. This early work created after his graduation and his return to his home island follows the same philosophy. Composition with window, Iceland offers a staged window with filters underlying the structure of the room opposed to the building and the outside. Over the years, Eliasson has continually explored the effects of projected light, with particular emphasis on how light and shadow transform and define a space, like in his permanent installation for the building of the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.
